Explanation in Complex Biological and Behavioral Systems Pre-Workshop

Join us for an engaging and interactive pre-workshop designed to prepare attendees for the full workshop experience.

This session aims to bridge the gap between philosophy and biology, giving participants from both disciplines a shared foundation for the discussions ahead. Topics will span the breadth of the workshop’s themes, including explanation in the history and practice of biology, complex systems, and gentle introductions to concepts such as game theory and self-assembly. We will explore the persistent need throughout the history of biology to employ multiple varieties of explanation that go beyond the sorts of causal and mechanical explanations characteristic of the physical sciences. We encourage attendees to ask questions, engage with new ideas, and build confidence before the upcoming workshop “Explanation in Complex Biological and Behavioral Systems” (May 15-16) begins. Our goal is to ensure that every attendee, regardless of background, feels equipped and inspired to participate fully and meaningfully in the workshop conversations.

As background for the pre-workshop, please peruse article below, which talks about the interaction between biology and philosophy of biology—what’s working and what could be done better—to help you become familiar with some of the major concerns in each of these two areas.  It’s not required, and we won’t be talking about this article directly in the pre-workshop, but it might help compare and contrast some of the questions and approaches that are commonly addressed in the two fields.
